Chondroitin sulfate is a major structural component of the extracellular matrix (matrix), which contributes to the elasticity of the articular cartilage. Besides the structural role of chondroitin attracts water molecules in cartilage, also contributes to the inhibition of proteolytic enzymes that cleave the protein structural components of cartilage.
